Portfolio Program

Tec-Voc High School has been a leader in career education for many years. Our answer to the question: “What is the purpose of education?” Is that students need the opportunity to prepare for success in life, to choose a satisfying career, and, not only, as the old song goes “get a job”, but to ensure the job is healthy and safe. For the past fifteen years all Tec-Voc students have participated in a credit course creating and utilizing a career portfolio. This program ha complemented the other elements of our career education program including an annual Career Fair, an annual Career Symposium, mentorship programs, work experience and other initiatives. The most recent revision of the curriculum for the Career Portfolio program was achieved through a grant from the Workers’ Compensation Board of Manitoba. Lessons were written to reflect current research and practice related to career education, workplace safety and health and pedagogy. Thompson Owens, co-author of the “Creating Independent Learners” series of books, wrote the curriculum. The focus of the lessons is Workplace Safety and Health in grade 10, Employability Skills in grade 11 and Transition to the workplace in grade 12. We are currently utilizing these lessons at Tec-Voc as part of our Career Portfolio program. We are happy to share the lessons with other educators.
